Day6 Rocking it Out in Chicago
The five member Korean band, Day6, performed at the Rosemont Theater this month for the Chicago leg of their Gravity World Tour. Fans (My Days) endured the pouring rain while waiting in line for the doors to open.
As the lights go down, My Days get louder. Unique light bands designed like a compass strapped to their wrists and creating a starry sky like view for the group. Those star-like lights multiply even more once Sungjin, Jae, Young K, Wonpil and Dowoon walk onto the stage.
Before the first song, the members have fans clap along to the beat of the drums to liven the atmosphere. The crowd instantly got to their feet to join in and the energy continued into the next songs.
After the opening songs, the members introduce themselves one by one. The last one to speak is Jae and he tells fans that if at any point of the concert, mainly while they’re talking, that they can sit down if they’re tired. My Days yell back that they won’t sit down. “I’m going to start over never mind. Don’t sit down. Nobody sit down. I better not see one person sit down” the singer jokes.
Jae continues his speech by encouraging everyone to enjoy the concert how they want to. “You are here to relieve stress. Important factors to think of: it doesn’t matter what the people next to you, what the people in front of you, what the people behind you think. You need to let loose and be yourself and have fun today.”
My Days took Jae’s words to heart by dancing and singing along the whole concert. Both the main level and balcony’s floors shook from all the movement taking place.
East and West music became one at the Rosemont Theater as Day6 performed a mashup of their songs: Like That Sun, Days Gone By and Blood with American songs: Shape of You, Treasure and Get Lucky.
Fans we’re surprised by the performance of Blood. The group admits that they changed parts of the setlist by popular demand online. “Because of your constant tweets, we added Blood” they announce.
The song I Wait showed to be a crowd favorite. My Days did their best to follow the fan chant as loud as they could possibly be. The quintet appeared to be surprised at the sudden energy jump that fans created. Their surprised turned into joy and they continued to play with larger smiles on their faces.
Day6 decided it was time to see how well their fans knew their songs. While the band played their instruments, My Days were in charge of singing to the song I’m Serious. While some parts were quieter than others, fans kept going until the end. Once the song ended, the group admitted that it was only a warmup. Congratulations, their debut song, started playing and fan had no trouble singing along word for word even the Korean parts. All of the members complimented the emotion filled singing and Jae confessed “I’ve never in my life two stepped to Congratulations” which caused everyone in the venue to laugh.
Following after the group performed their songs: Lean On Me, Headache and Warning before thanking the crowd and headed backstage. Before the five musicians could completely walk off the stage, fans started chanting for them to return for an encore.
The screen asks fans to light up the venue even more with their phone’s flashlights to go with all the light bands. Members of Day6 come back to the stage wearing the long-sleeved tour shirts and light bands on their left wrists. The lights stay up Cover and You Were Beautiful.
It was now Day6’s turn to sing Congratulations, but fans had something planned. My Days held up banners saying ‘A page of beautiful youth let’s write it down together’ in Korean. This saying is a reference to the group’s song Time of Our Life.
Each of the members take turns saying their individual goodbyes and final messages to Chicago My Days. Leader Sungjin thanks fans for being awesome and helping make their performance the same way. He promised that he’d work hard to study English so he can talk more when they come back again. “Work hard and study hard. Promise you” Sungjin says with a smile.
Jae admitted that he planned on being poised and collected during the show but changed his mind after seeing the crowd’s energy. “I was like ‘nope never mind, I’m gonna go crazy today’” he proudly states. “You’ve convinced me. Your energy is just amazing.”
It’s tradition for Day6 to take a picture or two with the audience after a concert and they weren’t breaking it in Chicago. In the first picture everyone, including the quintet, held up the fan made banners and in the second one people posed in whatever way they wanted.
Jae encourages fans to put their phones down for the next song to fully enjoy the moment. “Memories are not captured but felt.” Majority of My Days place their phones in their pockets and move along to the beat of the ong Dance Dance.
Young K subtly announces that his parents are in the crowd when he wanted to find out which side of the venue is louder. He stands in the middle of the stage to decide who is on what half. Because his parents sat in the middle of the balcony, Young K wanted to be careful. “Good I’m not splitting up my parents” he comments as he looks up to them.
It wouldn’t be a Day6 concert without having at least one member run into the crowd. During their last song, Freely, Jae runs off the stage and dances in the isles with fans. His adventure ends right before the last chorus to rejoin the others to finish the song.
With a final bow, Day6 ended their first ever concert in Chicago, but promised fans that they would be back soon. My Days leave Rosemont Theater feeling happy and stress free just as the five members wished for them to be.
